I was born in 1963 in BMH mount Kellet, Hong Kong and because my father was in the forces we moved around a lot. I joined the Army in 1980 and left in 1986 but missed the camaraderie and so joined the territorial army and stayed with them for the next 11 years. Being a keen sportsman I have tried most things from scuba diving to freefall parachuting but after moving to Norfolk in 2000 sports took a back seat until 2002 when my daughter saw an advert for Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu in the Thetford sports centre. She wanted to have a go but not alone, so I tagged along having never really thought about trying a Martial art. |
I always like a challenge because it gives you a sense of achievement and pride in what you have done. My Shodan Ho grading was one of the most physically demanding and painful tests I’ve done since I was in Basic training at 17. The support and encouragement is always there when ever anyone needs it, which just reinforces the sense of belonging to the family.
Ishin Ryu has given me the chance to expand my knowledge by encouraging us to attend seminars in other martial art styles, and as a result I have travelled to Norway, Croatia and Spain as well as around the UK. Making new friends every where we go.
