Scott Thurston Sensei 2nd Dan |
|
|
I first started Judo 1989 a month or so before my 5th birthday with Kanazawa Budo
Club. My first Sensei was Patrick (Paddy) Swallow Renshi at the time a 4th Dan.
In the 17 years I have been doing judo I have been taught by many other Sensei, but have remained loyal to my first. During my 17 years I have tried out several different martial arts on many occasions, these include Jujitsu, Hapkido, Aikido, Iaido, Tai-chi, kickboxing, karate and a few more. I practiced karate for 5 years and it is currently the only other martial art in which I am graded. I have always stuck with Judo throughout however, and was fortunate enough to have trained under Alfred Bates Kancho for several years. I achieved my Shodan in September 2001, my Doshi (teaching award) in September 2004 and my Nidan in April 2005. I began assisting Sensei Patrick in teaching as soon as I achieved my Shodan and opened my first club in November 2004 at St Ivo Leisure centre, which has been a growing success ever since. |
Renshi Patrick (Paddy) and I instruct at 4 clubs in the Cambridgeshire area (St Ivo Leisure Centre, Fenstanton Primary School, Stukeley Meadows Primary School and Huntingdon Medway Centre). We joined Ishin Ryu in December 2005 and hope that with this change of association we can further expand these clubs, particularly with our adult sessions.
As well as martial arts I am also very fitness orientated and have worked in the sports and leisure industry for 3 and half years. During this time I have picked up a number of qualifications that I feel are relevant to my martial arts career as well as my career in leisure. These qualifications include: Y.M.C.A. Gym Instructor
Y.M.C.A. Circuits Instructor
Y.M.C.A. Nutrition and weight management
First Aid at work (I am currently booked onto a course to become a trainer/assessor.)
Child Protection
IOSH - Health and safety supervising safety safely
Coaching qualifications in swimming and trampolining
I am very happy to have made the move to Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu and can foresee a bright and prosperous future with the help and guidance of Kevin Pell Hanshi.
