Message: Ouss Soke,

I don't know where to begin after last weekend's grading.

I suppose a start would be to say thank you to you Soke, all of the Dan grades and Sempai that got stuck in (Sempai Kemal) and last but not least to all of my fellow students, without whose ritual abuse and Mickey taking I could not done without.

I would like to say a huge well done to Renshi Steve for a monster quadruple grading; you really are an example to all of your students.

A big well done to everyone else, you all worked extremely hard which makes me genuinely proud to be part of this organisation.

Safe to say I will be back on the phys in the New Year and cannot wait to see you all again very soon.

Message: Ouss Soke,

Sorry for taking my time to e-mail you, I've been extremely busy being Christmas time.
I would like to say Thanks once again for letting me grade to yellow belt, it was, as usual, an honour. I wish I could have stayed onto orange belt, but my shoulder wouldn't have let me. I'm still nursing my shoulder back to full health again so that I'm ready to go when the Dojo's reopen in the new year.

If I don't speak to you soon, I wish you and Teresa a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Message: Ouss Soke,

Well, the next day had dawned and I decided to stumble onto the weighing scales for some strange reason: I'd lost seven pounds of bodyweight between Friday night and Sunday morning! Dunno how that happened... But it probably explains my current constant craving for food and liquid. We could start a new diet craze: the Ishin Ryu diet, guaranteed weight loss...

Anyway, aches and pains aside, thank you for yesterday, that shoulder injury really set me back and I feel like I've finally managed to put it behind me by passing that grading. Funny thing is that my, and Bushey's, success does feel a little hollow in that James P. didn't make it. Real shock to the system that.

Anyway, thanks again and I shall see you on Tuesday night for fun, frolics and buffet food. Games wise, can I suggest extreme dodge ball and man-hunt basketball?

Congrats to all the Ishin Ryu students who were successful at the Judo Tournament, especially Andy with his win.

Takes me back to our infant judo days where he used to clean up, competitive bastard! It's great to see that your students can enter a Judo tournament which is so different to how they're used to training and do so well. That's Ishin Ryu determination for you (and the dirtiest fighters this side of Glasgow!) Sorry I couldn't be there myself to have a go - maybe next year!

Message: A brief thank you (if a bit late) for the most amazing leaving gift I could have been given from all those who I've grown so close to and loved more as a second family expanding far across the country.

My first week here at welbeck has been amazing, even if I am absolutely knackered! I honestly feel as you do the morning after a grading, but every day!!! But it's amazing!

I am glad to say I have managed to find a rather good victim for me to practice my techniques on, who is actually very good at picking up on when I am going to hurt him, so, so far so good.

Message: Hi Kevin, First of all, sorry for mailing you so long after the Shochu Geiko. I hope you are well and thank you again for inviting me down to teach, again this year the seminar was fantastic. My Students really enjoyed it, even there bruises, aches and pains. The mats were all great; I managed to get on some that I have missed on previous years. A big "Thank You" to all your Sensei's, Sempai's and Students for there great respect. Look forward to the report on the website. Also, sorry for the delay in getting the tape for your Kick bags, but hope you put it to use. Martin Folan.

Message: Dear Soke,

Now that the dust has settled after my trial (and much needed holiday), I wanted to formally write to the organisation and thank you for the time and support that you and Teresa have personally given to me and my family in the most awful of years. And to thank each and every member who has supported me throughout this harrowing ordeal. I would like to single out a few members for special thanks and gratitude – Renshi Trevor; Sensei Mark Thomas; Sensei Andy Tierney; Sempai Sheila Eglen; and last but by no means least, Simon Fletcher. But most of all I would like to thank Renshi Mark Hayden-Smith, whose character reference was read out at my trial and undoubtedly had a significant bearing on the outcome.

I am proud and honoured to be associated with the organisation, and I am humbled by the support that I received throughout.

I look forward to getting back into the swing of things very soon,

Yours in Budo,

Chris Dunn Sensei.

Message: I would like to say how proud I am of my two new Shodan-Ho students. Lisa is the youngest ever girl to achieve the rank of Shodan-ho which is a fantastic achievement. She showed true determination & Ishin Ryu spirit that would put many martial art students to shame. Well what can I say about super sonic Dell, he is a very respectful and disciplined student and has been a pleasure to teach over the years. It was an honour and privilege as their instructor to award them with their certificates. Congratulations to Sempai Lou and Sempai Ruth in passing their Shodan-Ho grading. A very big thank you to our support team Sharon Johnson for all the great food she supplied, and of course Sempai Vearnon for holding the after party at their house.

A massive congratulations to all four of the new Shodan Ho for their gradings. All four showed fighting spirit, Kiai, strength and resilience and was amazing to witness four such determined candidates.

As usual it is a credit to all the Sempai, Sensei, Renshi and Soke himself that such fine students reflect the Ishin Ryu way and continue to do it proud.

Amazing effort.

Message: Ouss Soke,

Once again an enjoyable senior grade training day.

Congratulations to the four new Shodan-Ho. Well done to Sempai Del, Lisa, Lou and Ruth. It was a good 12 hour grading with a gentle stroll (12 mile run) around the Norfolk golf and country club as a nice two and a half hour warm-up. Well done to Leigh Keyte for completing that as well.

Thank you as well goes to Sharon and Sempai Vernon and Sempai Lisa for opening their house to be invaded by a large bunch of tired Ju-Jitsuka, for an after grading buffet and leaving party for Jess. Jess is leaving for pastures new but I am sure she will put her heart and soul into everything se does. Good luck Jess!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again in two weeks time at the Shochu Geiko.

Just like to pass on my congratulations to the new Sempai, Lisa, Dell, Ruth and Lou after their grading on Saturday. A long and hard day for the four of them but worth it in the end.

I also have to mention that all those who did the run in the morning, it was a tremendous effort. An awesome day which I know Sheila will be overjoyed at as the girls now lead the men 4 to 3!!!!

As a dad I'm grateful to you, Renshi Trevor and Mark, and to Sensei Andy and Mark , for your time and allowing Lisa to prove to herself what she is capable of.

Just thought I would leave a guestbook comment thanking you on such a good induction weekend. I enjoyed every part of what I learnt from the weekend. Yet again, it was an honour to train under you and with your students, as I don't get the chance to do that often, I really enjoyed every second of it. The 'nature walk'! Message: Hi Soke,

It's been a while since I have last written my last e-mail to you; I have been busy travelling back and forth to Holland and organising everything to move here, I have now assembled my computer here in the Netherlands and wanted to write to you first. I have spent ages on the Ishin Ryu site catching up with news, and I must say that the website looks very impressive! I am also glad to see that Ishin Ryu is still continuing to grow and thrive and I must admit I felt a pang of longing to be a part of it all again.

There is another reason I wanted to write to you and that is to thank you.

My life is progressing in a very positive way and I myself have changed much over the last couple of years. I know that it is all down to you, I remember the first time walking into your Dojo absolutely terrified, and I knew it showed. I had little self-esteem and hardly any confidence to speak of, yet I had kept coming back, and piece by piece my confidence had started to grow thanks to you, the Sensei and all the other students that I trained with.

The seed had been planted in me and still continues to grow in way I never once thought possible, I am even discovering leadership skills I never even knew I had. It is all down to you and your organisation that you founded.

You really have given me confidence, drive and determination, and thus you have handed me life. For that I cannot thank you enough. You have taught me invaluable life skills, and even though I had not realised it then, I do now.

I want to finish this up by wishing you well, and if you fancy a holiday in Holland you are welcome to stay with us.

Best wishes,

I am grateful and honoured to be allowed to be part of it and hopefully will continue to be present in its future, thank you for the opportunity.

Message: Ouss Soke,

Once again a very good evening was had by all at the Anniversary Dinner. A big thank you from Sensei Laura and me for presenting our student Leigh with his trophy for Student of the Year.

Also congratulations go to everyone who gained a title or advancement. Special congratulations go to Sensei Laura who trains hard and gets that little bit closer to better fitness after her operation, also for always being by my side as an excellent instructor, privileged Uke and a very understanding wife. Congratulations on your promotion to Sandan it has been well deserved.

Some more special congratulations go to Paddy Swallow on gaining his Kyoshi title - well deserved. Congratulations also to Trevor Steward on being advanced to Yondan and also gaining his Renshi title - it just feels right to call him Renshi. And last but by no means least congratulations to Andy Tierney on finally getting his Shodan and Sensei title. All I can say is it took long enough. :)

Once again congratulations to everyone who gained a title or advancement they are all well deserved.

Hope to see everyone very soon.

Message: Ouss Soke,

As the dust settles after another great Anniversary dinner, I would like to send my heartfelt congratulations to all of those who gained awards, titles and Dan grade advancements. Congratulations to Sensei Laura on her 3rd Dan, I knew that she deserved it.

I also would like to congratulate the whole of the Ishin Ryu Yudansha on their Dan grade advancements. Renshi Trevor received a double shock with his title advancement and his long awaited 4th Dan and his rightful black and red belt, well done! Sensei Mark Thomas and Andrew Herbert receiving their 2nd Dan, it just shows that all their hard work to the Renmei has paid off.

And last, what a surprise - Sempai Andy (lemming) Tierney is a SENSEI! No words can explain how much I wish to congratulate him.

Yet again, Renshi Trevor and his display team did not let us down. Every minute of the display I sat there absolutely amazed at all of those involved. It shows how much hard work went into that display.

Thanks again for another GREAT weekend under you Soke, Domo Arigato,

I have a few thanks/congratulations/comments to make from the last Advanced training day/ Shodan-Ho grading.

First of all, I would like to thank yourself for your hospitality, as usual I felt at home.

Second, the NEW SEMPAI'S!!! A huge congratulation has to said for the four that graded and passed. It was an honour to play a part of the grading, no matter how little of a part I played. All of the candidates surprised me with the amount of effort and guts they put into this grading. The milling! First time I have ever milled and it was surprisingly fun to mill with Sempai Lou. A huge well done guys!

I would like to thank Sempai Vern and Sharron for the after party and grub. After the long day in the dojo, I think everyone was grateful for the food and the drink.

Finally, I would like to wish Jess from the Thetford Dojo all the best. Since I affiliated to Ishin Ryu, I have noticed she was involved in everything that was going, and that's one hell of an achievement. I wish her the best of luck in college, university and finally Sandhurst! All the best Jess!

In particular the award of Dan grades to our very talented and deserving instructors was moving to witness and I hope will inspire all of them to keep giving so much back to all us Ishin Ryu students.

I know they inspire all of us to keep training hard and push always forward in whatever way is possible despite all of our minor, and sometimes major, setbacks.

With honour and respect,

Message: Ouss Soke,

Thank you so much for a great weekend, my family really enjoyed themselves. Renshi Trevor's display was awesome; thank god Leigh got it on the camcorder because I was so in awe watching it I forgot to take photographs.

Thank you for surprising me with my third Dan, I can not put in to words how much it means to receive a grade from you! I think I have now stopped shaking!

There were a lot of surprises and they were all well deserved. We were all crying when Renshi Trevor made his speech, and when you gave Sensei Andy Teirney his first Dan.

I am going to ring the embroiderer in a moment to get my new Dan bars added to my Obi (not that I can't wait or anything Soke!)

Lots of love Laura xxxx

Message: Ouss Soke,

Congratulations on another spectacular anniversary dinner, without a doubt the best one yet.

Well done to everyone who received an award... so many deserving students.

Congratulations to Sensei Andy Herbert and Sensei Martin Fricker on their 2nd Dan and Sensei Laura Peil and her 3rd Dan and also Renshi Trevor Steward on his 4th Dan and Renshi title.

The biggest congratulations has to go to Sensei Andy Tierney, I can't express enough how happy I am for him and how great it will be to see him on the mat in a black Gi top wearing the coveted "Ishin Ryu" black belt.

But none of the above could have happened without you and Teresa and Renshi Mark... thanks for another great year in Ishin Ryu.

Honour and Respect always,

Message: Dear Kevin and Teresa,

As you know Clare and I attended the 17th Anniversary Dinner on Saturday... and a most enjoyable time was had by both of us. We especially thank you for the kind gift of the bottle of Champagne that you kindly presented us during the awards ceremony. All at table seven enjoyed a glass. Thank you. We didn't expect it and was lovely thought to help us celebrate our 4th Wedding Anniversary.

I also had the chance to mix with some of the chaps and it was heart wrenching to witness the emotion of the occasion as your senior grades were presented with their grades and titles. Please congratulate them, especially the new Renshi - A deserved grade indeed.

It was a very revealing experience chatting to your senior guys. The warmth in which they speak of you is refreshing. The high regard and respect that they show to the visiting affiliated instructors is second to none, not only at the dinner but at the international camps. Mixing in an environment such as the Renmei without the intra-bickering that plagues other organizations is a liberating experience.

I must take this opportunity to congratulate you for propagating such open minded students; their acceptance of other styles and instructors outside of Ishin Ryu is truly remarkable. There is none of this 'Euuuu - Karate' syndrome. Or I only 'DO' Jujitsu and Judo. : )

Again thank you for the Champagne! - Truly enjoyed.

Yours in Kempo

Message: Dear Soke,

In the name of the whole Swiss Team I would like to say a big thank you for this year's anniversary dinner. We had a great time and enjoyed once more the good company of the Ishin Ryu community. I would also like to dedicate a big thank you to Teresa and to everyone who worked behind the scenes and helped to make this event become a great success. I know from my own experience how much work and effort is necessary to have an event organised in such a professional way.

I would like to thank you also for my promotion to Nidan and your warm words; you know that you are the only person I would have accepted it from and as it came from you, it makes me feel very proud and very honoured. Even more than for the grading I am deeply grateful for all your support and your sincere friendship in the past years. That means a lot to me. Domo Arigato Gozaimashita.

Last but not least I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone I missed at the evening on their promotions, titles and awards. Well done!

Thank you for writing the report on our grading. Thank you to everyone who was there on the day to give us their support, especially Sensei Laura, sorry I bled so much but it looked like Eddie mopped most of it up with his Gi! All our friends at St Athan were very pleased for us, we even got points awarded to us from our PE Department at school. My big toe is just about back to its normal size.
